This New Year’s Eve is not only the end of another year, but also marks the closure of a decade. Hence, an evaluation of the top ten movies of the decade is in order.
One of the most clicked cinema WebPages is the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) which has made its own list of the ten best movies from 2000.
At number ten, with an average of 8.5, we find “Das Leben der Anderen” (The life of others). This 2006 German production, by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck holds among its numerous international awards, an Oscar as the Best Foreign Language Film of the Year for 2007. It tells the story of an agent of the Stassi in East Berlin, conducting surveillance on a writer and his lover who finds himself becoming increasingly absorbed by their lives. Unlike other movies depicting a somewhat humorous life in Germany before the fall of the wall, such as “Sonnenalle” or “Goodbye Lenin”, “Das Leben der Anderen” is maybe the most realistic description of the dark side of the former East Germany.
