TIRANA, March 3 – Three old documentary films directed by Albania’s Marianthi Xhako, shot during the 1960s and 1970 launched on Wednesday, March 2, the month of Albanian women directors at the Central State Film Archive cinema. The event opened with a documentary on Berat called “The city of 1000 windows” after the southern town’s nickname which Xhako directed in 1959 to defend her diploma in Moscow where she completed the film studies.
The month of women documentary and film directors, which in Albania were few, will continue in four other Wednesdays during March bringing productions by other talented directors such as Donika Muci on March 9, Liri Brahimi on March 16, and Vitori Celi on March 23.
The event which is held in the frame of March 8, the International Women’s Day, will close on March 30 with some productions of late children’s film director Xhanfize Keko, regarded as Albania’s best women director, and documentary director Adriana Elini.
The women director’s month comes after the Central State Film Archive cinema screened French movies of the 1950s and 60s during February to commemorate the 70s and 80s in Albania during the communist regime when French films were some of the few foreign productions that were not banned.
Earlier in January, the Film Archive dedicated its Wednesday cinema to the screening of the best movies and documentaries by Albanian director Dhimiter Anagnosti.
