TIRANA, Sept. 7 – Albanian Hollywood sisters Greta and Vilam Zenelaj have announced they will shoot a film about the April 2, 1991 event in Shkodra where four young men protesting against the communist party were shot dead. The incident took place one month after Albania had held its first multi-party elections– which were still won by the communist party– since the end of World War II.
This new project was announced during a meeting the Zenelaj sisters had on Wednesday with Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
The Zenelaj sisters represented the Albanian cinema in the Durres International Film Festival with two movies, “In the Woods” movie and “What do I do now”.
Released in early 2011,”In the Woods” was the second feature of the two sisters who work as film producers and actresses.
With more than 10 years living in the States, Vilma and Greta Zenelaj are the founders of Colored Films which is the first Albanian film production company in Hollywood.
“In the Woods,” is a 2010 production, a thriller that was shot in limited conditions for 10 days, with only 10 crew and cast members at the Angeles National Forest. The movie had its world premiere on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the 9th Annual Female Eye Film Festival in Toronto, Canada, the Zenelaj sister say on their website.
“We are thrilled to be screening at the FE Film Festival. We are especially excited to join the dialogue about the role of women and arts. Both my sister and I have been dedicated to increasing diversity in the community of women artists. We work for empowerment and visibility of women artists,” said founder of Colored Films and film producer Vilma Zenelaj.
“Having our film ‘In The Woods’ accepted at the FE Film Festival means that our hard work and talent will be recognized. Being a minority among women directors we proudly join the celebration of women filmmakers from around the world,” said writer and executive producer Greta Zenelaj.
