TIRANA, Feb. 26 – Following the successful stage of Puccini’s Tosca from February 16 to 20, Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata will be the new premiere at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The opera will stage from March 7 to 10 as an Albanian-Italian cooperation on the 200th birth anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi, Italy’s most famous composer.
Zhani Ciko, the director of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, says this year’s programme will be dedicated to the most renowned pieces staged during the Opera House’s 60-year existence, the 200th birth anniversary of Italy’s most renowned composer Giuseppe Verdi, and Germany’s Wagner joining worldwide celebrations of the two giants.
In Albania, La Traviata has seen six productions with the absolute premiere in 1956. This is a commemorative production which is dedicated to the performers of the Violetta in the 60-year history of the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, says director Zhani Ciko.
The last time Verdi’s La Traviata staged at the National Theatre of Opera was in April 2011 Directed by Nikolin Gurakuqi, the Opera House’s symphonic orchestra was conducted by Greek American conductor Peter Tiboris with Albanian sopranos Eva Golemi and Ramona Tullumani starring. Italian tenor Fabio Andreotti and Albania’s Armando Kllogjeri also performed in the popular opera.
La Traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La dame aux Camꭩas (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, fils. The title “La traviata” means literally The Fallen Woman, or perhaps more figuratively, The Woman Who Goes Astray. It was originally entitled Violetta, after the main character.
The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet will offer a choreographic reinterpretation of Verdi’s most famous operas to honor twelve performers of Violetta during its sixty-year history as an Opera House.
Tefta Tasho Koco, Marie Kraja, Gjyzepina Kastoria, Nina Mula, Edit Mihali, Mirela Tafaj, Tatiana Kora, Inva Mula, Mariana Leka, Ermonela Jaho, Eva Golem, Ramona Tullumani are the 12 performers of Violetta performers in the history of La Traviata’s stage. The orchestra is conducted by maestro Eno Koco, while ballet dancers Enada e Gerd Vaso will be the show’s soloists and choreographers in a set design by Erald Bakalli and costumes by Ardi Asllani. This show is organized in collaboration with the Italian Institute of Culture on the occasion of 200th anniversary of birth of the famous composer.

The National Theatre of Opera and Ballet, which this year marks its 60th anniversary is the largest theatre in Albania and is home to an opera and ballet ensemble. The theatre was founded in 1953 and is a repertory theatre, which also regularly offers premi鳥s of operas by Albanian composers.
