TIRANA, Sept. 7 – Albania’s government has appointed a new national police chief — Muhamet Rrumbullaku — following last week’s sacking of Gledis Nano.
Interior Minister Bledi Çuçi made the announcement of the appointment of new General State Police Director Rrumbullaku following Wednesday’s government meeting.
Rrumbullaku, was born in Tirana in 1966, graduated from the police academy in 1988 and has a law degree. He has had a lengthy career in the state police and the Interior Ministry and recently served as a General Director of the Police Supervision Agency, according to his official biography.
Rrumbullaku’s predecessor to the post, Nano, had a short 11-month tenure. Albania has been recently plagued by deadly violence and targeted killings among rival criminal groups. Moreover, several incidents of some family violence have left a high number of victims.
One example was the horrid death of a child in a Himara beach, after she was hit by a speedboat driven by an off-duty police commissioner who had been reinstated after prior legal issues. The incident caused massive popular uproar and protests that called for both the police director and interior ministers to resign.
Çuçi told reporters that “the change of management through the dismissal of the General Police Director will bring efficiency in order to have a stronger reaction to the fight against crime.”
