The New Testament, a play written by the French playwright Sacha Guitry (1885-1957), was presented to a crowded Tirana theater on the 8th and 9th of July. A warm and energetic interpretation by a renewed troupe charmed the numerous spectators on both nights.
Each evening at the Black Box scene, within the Academy of Arts of Tirana, the cast -one of two groups of students – under the direction of Sesilia Plasari, revealed to the enthusiastic public fresh interpretations of the celebrated theater piece.
The plot
A last will and testament is found by mistake in the pocket of Jean Marcelin, a French doctor, by his wife and his close friends. It was one of those nights when the doctor returning home. Upon reading the document the colleague and friend of the French doctor learns that 25 years ago his wife had betrayed him with his friend Jean Marcelin, that his son is sharing pleasures with Jean’s wife Lucie Marcelin, and that Dr. Jean Marcelin has a mistress and a daughter, which is, by the way, his secretary.
This elicits discussions on the premise of a new moral standing at the turning point of the first half of the XXth century which is the reason for the biblical title of the play: “The New Testament”.
