TIRANA, March 10 – The Albanian and Kosovo Prosecutor’s offices will continue strengthening their cooperation in the rule of law in order to speed up their EU integration processes, Albania’s top prosecutor Adriatik Llalla has said.
In a meeting with his Kosovo counterpart Aleksander Lumezi this week in Prishtina, the two chief prosecutors discussed challenges in tackling organized crime, terrorism and corruption.
Kosovo’s Chief Prosecutor Lumezi said investigating war crimes, corruption and economic crimes were the main challenges for Kosovo which has established a war crimes department and a unit to tackle corruption.
Llalla who is on an official visit to Kosovo, also met outgoing Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga and Kosovo Justice Minister Hajredin Kuà§i.
In a meeting with minister Kuà§i, Llalla stressed the need for the justice system’s independence from politics for more efficient performance.
Llalla, who has been Albania’s top prosecutor since 2012 and whose term in office is set to end in mid 2017, could prematurely end his term as part of a justice reform Albania is undertaking. However, the Venice Commission, a Council of Europe advisory body assisting Albania in the reform, is against the premature interruption of his mandate if he is vetted and cleared by that process.
