TIRANA, Aug. 16 – The prison department is preparing an amnesty for some 100 Albanian prisoners who are serving their terms in Albania after being sentenced in neighboring Greece where they previously were immigrants. Those who may profit from the amnesty will be the ones with minor crimes or those who had less than three more years to serve. Albanian prisons are filled beyond their capacities with sentenced persons.
There are a considerable number of Albanian prisoners from the countries where they lived as immigrants, mainly Greece and Italy. But Albanian prisoners have signed a paper before being returned to their homeland in which they agreed to complete their sentences. That makes their amnesty difficult and Albanian authorities are trying to find ways to resolve the issue. It is said that women and children prisoners will be set free first following a deal with Greece which is expected to be signed in October.
