TIRANA, Oct. 1 – Inspired by women portrayed in Biblical writings, Albanian veteran painter Jorgaq Gogu has opened a solo exhibition at the National Art gallery showcasing a series of 22 oil paintings depicting the women of the Bible in an exhibition called the “Daughters of Eve.” For the first time in the history of the figurative art in Albania, Gogu is introducing through a series of oil paintings, biblical women as role models and reference, whose lives are as significant today as they were when they were first recorded. Inevitably the author through his paintings reflects the ebb and flow in society’s attitudes towards women and their role.

He undertook this challenge to introduce for the first time in the history of the Albanian art sacred art as a new discipline of art.

“You won’t find a stereotype of women in this gallery full of biblical characters. You come across mothers and daughters, wives and widows, queens, matriarchs, and the poor and destitute. Brave and courageous biblical women are forced to contend with cowardly and unscrupulous ladies. Some are shy; others are outspoken. Some are known for their beauty, wisdom, and grace; others for their fidelity, loyalty, and courage. Biblical women aren’t cookie-cutter characters — not an ordinary wife in the bunch,” says the artist.

Born in Berat, Jorgaq Gogu, 71, is an Albanian painter and sculptor who has participated in dozens of local and regional exhibitions in the past 25 years.

His exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Tirana will be open until October 11.
