British Ambassador Fiona McIlwham welcomed the Culture Ministry’s active engagement on Butrint and the minister’s commitment to responsible and sensitive development that improves enjoyment of Butrint heritage site, whilst minimising damage on the environment and archaeological riches. Ferdinand Xhaferri’s initiative to convene a meeting of key stakeholders on 30 March was a very positive step.
The Ambassador stated: “Given recent concerns about the road project at the Butrint National Park, I am delighted that the Minister was able to meet key stakeholders at the site on Tuesday and reassure us all of the Albanian Government’s ongoing commitment to protecting this national and world treasure, in line with Albania’s UNESCO obligations. Butrint is a jewel. We must work together to ensure that future generations are able to enjoy it fully too.”
The Ambassador noted that international experts had been particularly reassured to learn that: the road widening project would stop 1km away from the park gates; that it would avoid newly discovered sites of archaeological value; that there would be no bridge over the Vivari channel; and that the location of car and coach parks would be handled sensitively to ensure minimal visual, environmental and archaeological damage.
The Ambassador added: “The sensitive and responsible development of Butrint, with archaeology, environment, tourism and education bodies working together closely, will be a model for all further development in Albania and the rest of Europe. The Albanian authorities can count on international support from organisations, like the Butrint Foundation and British Council, to help make this happen.”
