TIRANA, July 22 – Albania’s National Theatre closed on Thursday the 11th edition of the Butrint theatre festival with the stage of Sophocles’ Electra. Translated into Albanian by Laert Vasili and directed by renowned Andonis Filipi, the ancient Greek tragedy brought together some of the best Albanian actors such as Luiza Xhuvani, Roza Anagnosti, Bujar Asqeriu etc.
The Albanian National Theatre was the sixth troupe to perform on the stage of the ancient amphitheatre of Butrint.
Participants in this year’s edition of the festival included Russia’s Vera Komissarzhevskaya state theatre with Shakespeare’s “A summer night’s dream,” Skopje’s Albanian Drama Theatre with Ibsen’s “Peer Gynt, Poland’s Nikoli Theatre of Krakow, performing the “Chopin night.”
Hungary and Romania participated together with Romeo and Juliet, a musical staged by the Budapest and Bucharest operetta theater, Romania’s Radu Stanca National Theatre with Electra, an adaption by Mihai Maniutiu.
Butrint 2000 is an annual theatre festival that takes place on a historic site in the south- Albanian town of Butrinti, on the shore of Lake Butrint. The festival started in 2000 and has presented works by Albanian artists, as well as more than 50 companies coming from
Greece, Italy, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Poland, Romania, the Netherlands, UK, USA, France, Russia, Sweden etc. It is also considered an event to promote cultural tourism in Albania.
