TIRANA, Dec. 8 – Extreme acts of family violence this week have shocked Albania and led to calls for better protections for at-risk women and children.
Two children, a woman and a man died in two separate incidents in the cities of Korca and Fier in a murder-suicide and a public murder. There was another attempted murder in Korca.
All these acts happened within immediate families, perpetrated by men.

Several experts told local media the system in place to protect the lives of children and women at risk of family violence had clearly failed in these cases and urged authorities to do more.
Albanian media spent the week reporting the killings in graphic details, drawing some criticism on the ethics of the coverage.

Editor’s note: It is this newspaper’s ongoing policy not to publish personal details of suicides of non-public persons.
