That part of history, in which Albanians saved the Jews from Nazis, still manages to amaze most people and to generate discussions. Regardless of the different explanations of this unique behavior, most scholars agree at one point: not a single Jew was handed out to the Nazis.
Original, uncensored documents, published for the first time by Albanian scholar Shaban Sinani prove that Albania was a second homeland for the Jews. “Jews in Albania, their presence and salvation” states that during WWII there where more that two thousand Jews rescued in Albania.
“It turns out that not only the League of Nations but also the largest Jewish organizations of the time found Albania the safest place for Jews during the Holocaust. Documents say that there have been bilateral agreements by U.S ambassador in Albania Herman Bernstein and minister Konica to install some 500 hundred Jewish families in our country. The British government reportedly has had the same interest, to create an entity of Jews in Albania that would be similar to that of Palestine. This project had the approval of the League of Nations as well” says author Sinani.
Among the documents consulted by scholar Sinani, there is a photograph of the Nobel laureate Albert Einstein with Herman Bernstein taken from archive of Bernstein when the latter was U.S. Ambassador to Albania, a new fact for the hypothesis that the famous scientist visited Albania in those years.
