TIRANA, Oct. 17 – Albania commemorated last week the 100th birth anniversary of Migjeni, one of the founders of contemporary poetry, who, although he died at the age of 27, left a great treasure for Albanian literature.
A scientific conference was held in his hometown of Shkodra on Oct. 11 bringing together scholars, praising his universal poems written in the 1930s. The local theatre in Shkodra is named after Migjeni.
On Oct. 14, the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet held a Spectacle of speech, movement and music on the work of Migjeni bringing together soloists of the Opera House.
With Migjeni (1911-1938), contemporary Albanian poetry began its course. Migjeni made a promising start as a prose writer. He is the author of about twenty-four short prose sketches which he published in periodicals for the most part between the spring of 1933 and the spring of 1938. Migjeni’s only volume of verse, Vargjet e lira, Tirana 1944 (Free verse), was composed over a three-year period from 1933 to 1935. The main theme of ‘Free verse’ is misery and suffering. It is poem of acute social awareness and despair.
