TIRANA, Oct. 4 – Albanian President Alfred Moisiu on Wednesday told a conference of judges that the consolidation of the judiciary is vital for strengthening the country’s democracy. “After 16 years of transition Albania has already won the necessary human resources and the legal basis for a sustainable and independent court system,” he said. Moisiu said that politics have played a negative effect on the judiciary with its influence, reminiscent of the past, as he called them. He appealed to politics to keep hands away from the judiciary system and not collectivity blame that system, which Moisiu called “a negative effort to our democratic system.” He appealed to the judges to take a look back and try to repair the mistakes or shortcomings noted in the system which is fundamental for the country’s development. “The court system should not identify with special judges who abuse the law and constitutional status,” he said. A sound judicial system is a key element that the country should try to improve along its integration efforts into the international institutions.
