TIRANA, Feb. 22 – President Alfred Moisiu on Thursday urged commisioners and their political parties not to impede the counting process but to speedily conclude that and the electoral process. “The lack of the political will and the reciprocal trust have been the main factors that inhibited the preparation and the continuation of the electoral process. The president is sorry that the political parties and the responsible institutions could not achieve to resolve them on time and with the required quality,” said a statement from his office. Moisiu also noted the positive results achieved in the Feb. 18 local polls like the participation of the voters, the behaviour of police and other independent institutions and also the informing and transparent role played by the media. But he also added that the administration of the results was accompanied with unnecessary shortcomings and incidents “which are sourced in the behaviour and intervention of politics.” “At this moment it is improtant to legally close the electoral process and immediately start the work with the newly-elected persons at the local power,” he said.
Moisiu also reminded the central government about issuing the ID cards for the citizens and the political spectrum of the electoral reforms that would make possible the holding of “free, honest and democratic elections” in the future. “These elections testified how important is the cooperation between the majority and the opposition, the dialogue in treating and resolving problems and the respect of the institutions.”
