TIRANA, Jan. 8 – Thousands of Orthodox believers all over Albania celebrated the Epiphany Day on January 6, commemorating the baptism of Jesus Christ in traditional church ceremonies which also involved the retrieve of wooden crosses cast into water by priests. Ceremonies were held in Durres, Korca, Gjirokastra and Berat where young men from different religious faiths defied rather warmer temperatures this year to retrieve crosses from the waters.
By tradition, a wooden cross is cast into the water and it is believed that the person who retrieves it will be freed from evil spirits.
