TIRANA, April 25 – The parliament held a special session this Monday to vote for the new Interior Minister.
Bujar Nishani who was decreed by President Bamir Topi last week but not fast enough to be voted at the Thursday’s session.
The parliament voted 73 in favor with only one against.
Last week Prime Minister Sali Berisha nominated Bujar Nishani for the post of interior minister. Nishani returns to the office he ran back in 2009. Justice Minister Bujar Nishani replaced Lulzim Basha as the new interior minister after Basha quit the post to contest the mayoral race for the capital, Tirana.
Basha will be running against the leader of the Socialist party and current Tirana mayor, Edi Rama, who is seeking a fourth term in the May 8 poll.
The post of justice minister is still vacant. Berisha also needs to find a replacement for Ferdinand Xhaferri, who stepped down as culture minister, to run for mayor of Durres
The local elections come amid fierce political rivalry between Berisha’s governing Democratic Party and the opposition Socialists, who allege the government rigged the general elections in 2009 to secure victory.
