LIBRAZHD, July.23- Despite Albania’s country-wide energy crisis, the district of Librazhd is not suffering through power outages as is the rest of the country. The rich hydropower reserves of the district and the small hydropower unit of Xhyra keep feeding the power system with 24 hours of power.
The district makes full use of many reserves with more than nine power units in operation and still another unit being built in the village of Dardha, which is predicted to cover two thirds of the consumption needs of the district of Elbasan.
Demands from the business field have made it possible for some of them to be given in concession while the process in general is long and is still dragging on. According to Platon Gani, the director of the water reserves of the Devoll and Shkumbini Rivers (both important rivers of central Albania), there are six units given in concession, while there are other demands from companies to build new ones. Gani also stresses that the existing ones are in very bad shape, given the lack of past investments and maintenance. Some of these units were built as early as 1980, while the others in the late 1990’s.
