TIRANA, July 5 – Two American painters have opened a joint exhibition at the Edward Lear gallery of the southern UNESCO town of Berat. The exhibition featuring 50 works by Joyce Conlon and Elizabeth Marran will be open to the public until July 10.
The small-sized paintings have been created in the oil-on-canvass technique.
“Like a shadow cast or an image reflected on water, my work involves the transformation of form on a surface. I locate my work within the tradition of modern American landscape artists and others like Thomas Nozkowski who have been inspired by nature and its intersection with culture,” says Joyce Conlon in her artist’s statement.
Meanwhile, Marran’s work investigates the relationship between traditional media such as drawing, painting and prints with technology. She conceptualizes her abstract images within a psychological framework where she references the relationship between order and chaos, discipline and lack of restraint, intention and accident. Recurring themes draw from the autobiographical, often poking fun of everyday life through quirky and conceptual means. “I am deeply committed to process, content and form,” states Marran.
The exhibition is also aimed at promoting the values of Berat at a time when the tourist season in Albania is in its full gear. Open since 1994, the “Edward Lear” is one of the oldest and most important galleries in Albania. Its collection reveals the contemporary and traditional works of art by Albanian and foreign artists.
