The Temple of Daute at “Cezma e Ferres”, in one of the most ancient quarters of the city of Durres, saw the coronation of Artemis-the daughter of Ledo and Zeus and the twin of Apollo, the Goddess of the hunt. French archaeologists have come to this surprising conclusion, recently, when in Durres on expedition. This is not the first time that foreigners have unearthed archaeological statues in Durres. The sanctuary of the Hill of Dautes in Durres, this buried archaeological treasure has always astounded foreign experts. An Albanian-French expedition has drawn the conclusion that the absolute dominant figure of the Temple of Daute, on this hill in Durres was not the Goddess of Love Aphrodite, as was previously believed, but the Goddess of the Wilderness and the Hunt Artemis. According to foreign experts Artemis was very much admired at that time to the extent where the inhabitants of Epidamus build her a sanctuary.
Artur Myller, Deputy Rector of the Charles de Gaulle University in France and Fatos Tartari, a well known archaeologist have now come out with the joint conclusion that the flourishing city of the Adriatic has the most richest collection of statues in terra cotta that mankind has ever known. At the sanctuary of Dautes, more than two tones of statues in terra cotta have been unearthed 30 cm in size, making this a unique example in the world of antiquity. The final report by the French experts is incontestable evidence ranking Dyraahiumin as the leading city of the ancient world for the production and preservation of these figures. Several other centers of the Greek-Roman world are known for terra cotta figures such as Tanagra, the Tasos Island and Taranto, but no where has such a quantity of terra cotta figures ever been unearthed which demonstrate brilliant technique. An underground fortification excavated by the army in the eighties, where dynamite was used wantonly, the barbarity of illegal buildings have damaged this centre beyond repair.
