GJIROKASTRA, Sept. 27 – The lack of qualified experts is a great obstacle for the protection of the cultural monuments in the southern town of Gjirokastra. The local department of cultural monuments has only 10 experts who are so overcome by the work. They should take care of at least seven objects that should be repaired like the house of Sk쯤ulat췥, ȡbej, Babameto, Babaramo, the castle and the bazaar turn. The government has allocated 17.5 million leks to repair them but they have practically no possibility to rush to each of them.
Meanwhile a well-known natural monument in Picar village in Gjirokastra, known as “Gurra e Picarit” is threatened that may be lost after there has been noted a crack in all the trees in the area. Head of the commune Shk쭱im Gu襠said that some 80 trees were suffering from a crack since some months. They asked for the presence of experts. They have made some partial cuts to save them but they are afraid to continue further. The “Gurra e Picarit” has a group of some 180 trees, most of whom are more than 100 years old.
