TIRANA, Aug. 16 – Prosecutors have started an investigation in the Tirana municipality for issuing 17 building suspicious construction permits, which were approved by then-mayor, Lulzim Basha, who is the head of Albania’s main opposition Democratic Party.

The National Agency for Planning had filed charges over the permits, the new mayor, Erion Veliaj said, adding his Socialist administration would suspend the permits in question.

Deputy Prime Minister Niko Peleshi has said the permits, which were issued just before the local elections, were “abusive.”

Basha has said the charges are politically motivated.

Basha served as Tirana mayor from 2011 to 2015, but did not seek reelection, looking to compete for the prime minister’s seat in 2017.
