TIRANA, May 15 – Albanian police have seized another massive haul of marijuana, with two tons of the drug captured early Thursday morning by Vlora police in southern Albania, authorities said.
Police stopped a van they had under surveillance at 5 a.m. and found the drugs, arresting the driver, Albanian media reported.
Vlora police said they believe the drugs came from Lazarat and were to be shipped to Italy.
In another bust, across the border, about 300 kilograms of marijuana were discovered by Greek border enforcement agents in a vehicle traveling from the border the city of Ioannina, authorities said.
Greek police said drugs were hidden in different parts of the vehicle with Greek license plates but driven by an Albanian citizen.
Meanwhile, Greek police in Igoumenitsa, bordering Saranda district, said two young Greeks blocked transporting 70 kilograms of marijuana on a bike.
The two young men, according to police, are suspected of transporting narcotics from Albania.
With several tons of marijuana having been blocked this year alone, there is growing concern about marijuana traffic in the border area between the two countries.
