Philanthropist scheduled to meet prime minister, opposition leader in short visit to Albania’s capital.
TIRANA, Dec. 4 – Philanthropist George Soros made a brief visit to Tirana late this week and was expected to meet with Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday and Opposition Leader Lulzim Basha on Friday.
Two of his books where promoted in their Albanian versions, published by the Albanian Institute for International Studies, as the world-renowned investor, writer and philanthropist visited Albania
At an event held at the Tirana Times bookstore, two of his most famous books, “The Tragedy of the European Union” and “The Soros Lectures at the Central European University” were promoted by AIIS, a leading think-tank in Albania.
The even also hosted a panel discussion about how Albania could use Spain’s example as it tries to modernize its society.
Few details of Soros’ visit were public as of press time, but a source told Tirana Times, the Soros would fly in for a short visit to meet with the two political leaders leaders and meet with the staff of his local foundation in Tirana.
The Soros-funded Open Society Foundation has financed hundreds of projects and scholars in Albania and across the wider region, giving significant impetus the country’s development.
Soros has been a prominent international supporter of democratic ideals and causes for more than 30 years. His philanthropic organization, the Open Society Foundations, supports democracy and human rights in over 70 countries.
Born in Budapest in 1930, George Soros is Chairman of Soros Fund Management LLC. As one of history’s most successful financiers, his views on investing and economic issues are widely followed. His net worth is about $20 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
