TIRANA, May 21 – Former Foreign Minister Besnik Mustafaj said he resigned from his post last month because, after 30 years, he no longer considered Prime Minister Sali Berisha as his friend.
“My resignation was in essence the public confirmation that a 30-year long friendship got rotten. Berisha has been one of my most valuable friends for 30 years but he is not any more,” said Mustafaj in a television interview.
Mustafaj resigned in April saying he was tired of the job, an excuse that was seen as only concealing the true reason for his unexpected resignation.
Mustafaj has been a very active minister, especially in a world diplomatic role in support of independence for Kosova.
Berisha himself, considered in 2006 that Mustafaj was the best and most successful minister in his cabinet.
Mustafaj has been one of the founders of the Democratic Party in December 1990 together with Berisha. When Berisha was president from 1992-1997 Mustafaj was ambassador to France, then a lawmaker and foreign minister when Berisha came back to power in September 2005.
Mustafaj considers himself a “writer in politics.”
“I am convinced of one thing: I am an ex-ambassador, I am an ex-minister, one day I will be an ex-parliamentarian, but I will never be an ex-writer,” he said, adding that his books are everywhere and that is his profession.
