TIRANA, Sep 10 – Albanian lawmakers on Tuesday elected Ilir Meta of the minor governing ally Socialist Movement for Integration Party, or LSI, as Parliament speaker.
After verifying the mandate of the new members, the Parliament voted 91-45 for Meta, 44, whose party is the minor ally of Edi Rama’s Socialist Party.
The leftist alliance achieved a landslide victory campaigning against widespread corruption and on a pledge to take the NATO member closer to eventual European Union membership in June elections, occupying 83 seats in the 140-member Parliament.
The Socialists and the LSI are the two political parties creating the new cabinet. The LSI has been given 5 posts.
