GJIROKASTRA, March 2 – Albanian organizations held a protest in the southern city of Gjirokastra last Sunday to protest a planed celebration by Greek nationalists in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of Northern Epirus — a plan to merge a chunk of southern Albania with Greece.
The protest was held Sunday in front of the Greek consulate in the city.
The participants held a big banner saying “Glory to Albania” in the trees near the consulate.
Greek nationalists consider much of southern Albania as part of their Megali Idea, the Greater Greece.
Albanian protesters said the declaration 100 years ago was an act of treason and done by a “chauvinist group.”
Albania’s recognized ethnic Greek minority lives in the Gjirokastra area, but they make up a tiny fraction of the region’s population.
