February Registers More Covid-19 Deaths Than Any Other Month

The month of February has become the worst month in terms of deaths due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. In 28 days, 416 deaths have been reported across Albania as a direct result of the virus, and the hopes are that the infection rate will start to slow down with the beginning of the warm temperatures. In January, the number of deaths due to COVID-19 was 199. According to the official numbers of the Ministry of Health, there are for the moment 35,598 active cases with the virus in Albania. In order to fight the spread of the pandemic, the Ministry introduced on the 10th of February a national curfew from 20:00 to 06:00.

On Thursday the Committee of Experts extended again the curfew, saying that it was giving results. “The situation continues to be delicate, a situation that should be monitored closely, but the number shows that there is a stable situation, and especially in the last days of this week, we are seeing a trend of slowing infection numbers,” said Mira Rakacolli, the head of the Committee. According to Reuters Covid-19 Tracker, Albania is reporting 261 infections per 100k people in the last 7 days, and “1,067 new infections on average each day, 96% of the peak – the highest daily average reported on February 11.”
