TIRANA, Dec.29- The European Union announced that it would call a tender to hire a supervisor for the construction of a passenger terminal at Albania’s largest Adriatic port of Durres. The news was given on Friday and the estimated value of the tender is 1 million euro ($1.3 million). The EU will call the tender on the 15th of February and potential candidates should file their applications by 16.00 pm on February 5. The provisional commencement date of the contract is May 15. The initial term of the contract is two years with a possible extension. Tenders Electronic Daily, the supplement database to the EU’s Official Journal, reported on its website that the aim of the contract is to provide supervision services for the construction of the ferry terminal building and yard at the port of Durres. The ferry terminal works include removal of the existing structures and buildings, overhaul of the ferry terminal yard, access road, entrance and exit gates for vehicles, and the construction of a ferry terminal building. EU’s Community Assistance for Reconstruction, Development and Stabilization (CARDS) program for Albania is covering the costs. Albania will get a total of 63.5 million euro in assistance for various projects. The construction of the new passenger terminal in Durres, in the west, is part of Albania’s efforts to bring the port in line with European Union standards. The entire project costs 40 million euro and will be financed mainly by foreign donors. It includes the reconstruction of infrastructure, improvement of safety elements for ferry boats, and reconstruction of two quays at the port and building an access road to the ferry terminal.
