TIRANA, March 24 – Albania is on the eve of getting the visa-free regime and very likely also soon candidate status from the European Union.
That is a great achievement for the post-communist country and it also increases its obligations, among others, on human rights.
That seems to be the reason behind the planned meeting that EU ambassadors will hold with Albanian human rights groups.
EU ambassadors launched the first annual meeting between EU representatives and Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) in Albania. Ambassadors and representatives of key human rights groups discussed common concerns, priorities and action for supporting human rights work in Albania.
They aim at supporting a number of initiatives locally to promote and protect human rights. There is a need for improvements to the electoral system; a track-record in the prosecution of corruption cases; upholding of individual rights and defence of media freedom.
