ROME, Oct. 11 – Prime Minister Edi Rama has secured Italy’s support for Albania’s bid to open EU accession negotiations during an official visit to Italy on Wednesday.
In a joint press conference, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said the European Union will soon review the issue of launching of accession negotiations with Albania, adding he was confident Italy and all EU members will support the launching of accession talks. “I think that the time is right to open accession negotiations with Albania,” Gentiloni said. “Albania has taken incredible steps even in other sectors, which the EU is watching closely.
Rama said he was thankful for Italy’ support and the strategic partnership between the two countries enjoyed.
Rama said there was no doubt Italy had been Albania’s chief advocate in Brussels.
Rama also thanked the Italian authorities for their assistance as Albania fights against cannabis cultivation and trafficking.
