Washington, Feb. 26 – The National Albanian American Council (NAAC) endorses the United Nations process, supports the work of special envoy Marti Ahtisaari and his team, and urges quick resolution of the Kosova final status. Further, NAAC urges the UN Security Council to immediately approve the final Ahtisaari report and make a clear and unambiguous declaration for Kosova’s full and unconditional independence. Over the course of the past year, NAAC has met with the Kosova political leaders and government officials, US State Department policy makers, United Nations Ambassadors, representatives of leading policy institutions in the US and Europe, as well as with leaders of the Albanian American community to rally support and to help shape the path toward Kosova’s final status. It became abundantly clear that the only solution for regional stability and security is independence for Kosova. While we endorse the process and work, we also have some recommendations which we believe will strengthen the implementation process so that Kosova becomes a functional democracy. NAAC believe that it is in the best interest of Europe and the United States to ensure a smooth transition to self rule and a modern country, where every individual, no matter the ethnicity, religion or gender, will be respected and protected by the law of the land. Kosova, indeed, Southeast Europe needs to be held accountable but must also be given all the proper international recognition and authority to become a member of the European family. Recently, at a Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars conference on Kosova, Avni Mustafaj, Executive Director, said “the Balkans, including Serbia’s, road to the Europe Union is directly linked to Kosova independence as it would encourage countries to pursue policies to become viable members of the international community.” Kosova has been a protectorate of the United Nations for the 8 past years and has had it’s final status denied. NAAC believes strongly that will of the people of Kosova must be respected – now! The only solution is an immediate recognition of sovereignty and independence for Kosova.
The National Albanian American Council (“NAAC”) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advocating for Albanians and promoting peace and economic development in the Balkans by fostering democratic policy, promoting respect for human rights, and conducting educational and developmental programs.
