Meta accuses Berisha of closing Gerdec blast investigation

TIRANA, July 7 – Ilir Meta, leader of the opposition Socialist Movement for Integration, said the Gerdec file on the March 15 blast that killed 26 persons had yet to be opened and accused Prime Minister Sali Berisha of the governing Democratic Party of trying to take the judiciary under his control.
Meta said that unless the Gerdec case was resolved, installing the rule of law and reforming the judiciary in the country would be very hard to achieve.
Meta claimed that the Gerdec blast file had yet to be open because of the pressure on the judiciary from politicians. The opposition has accused Berisha of being directly involved in the case. Former Defense Minister, Fatmir Mediu, is being investigated, though yet to be charged for possible abuse of post. (Tirana Times Staff)
