TIRANA, Nov. 9 – The number of .al domains has reached 20,000, registering a 78 percent increase since the full liberalization of the service in 2013.
The .al domains include government portals under gov.al, military institutions under mil.al, public and private educational institutions under edu.al, net.al for companies and org.al for organizations.
“The number of domains registered for 2015 is 5,466 with an increase of 15 percent compared to 2014 and some 2,976 were registered in the first ten months of this year. It should be stressed that after the full liberalization and the transition to a registrar the number of domains has increased by 78 percent,” says AKEP, the electronic communications authority.
New registrations, renewals, deactivations and data changes have been liberalized since May 2013.
Until early 2010, registration of an .al domain cost $75 but the tariff was later lowered to 2,000 Lek ($20) in an effort to liberalize the market.
