TIRANA, March 12 – Police held Monday the first meeting of a central command created for the fight against drugs. Albanian weather favors planting marijuana, cannabis sativa. Police discussed on the steps they will undertake to prevent that especially in those areas considered to be problematic. They are usually planted in remote areas far away from the inhabited areas in order to avoid identification of the authors. Last year police reported better results in preventing its cultivation. In 2006 police eliminated some 74,000 plants of cannabis, or four times less than a year ago. This year as well police has drafted a plant, a strategy how to prevent planting of drugs. It will create local commands including all public administration levels. It considers prevention as a major item of its program and will make an increased public awareness, also improving cooperation with other law-enforcement institutions.
