Chopin Year brings French pianist to Tirana

TIRANA, March 29 – Albanian celebrations to mark the 200th birth anniversary of renowned Polish composer Chopin will continue with a series of other events. French pianist Pascal Gallet will give on Sunday, March 4 a concert at the Academy of Arts in Tirana in the frame of the Chopin Year events which are being held around the world and in Albania. The 42-year-old French pianist has had a busy career playing with the Calgary Philharmonic, the UNAM Symphony (Mexico), the Duisberg Philharmonic Orchestra (Germany) conducted by Jonathan Darlington, the Belgrade Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Meanwhile, the “Frederic Chopin” young pianist competition will be held from April 23 to 26 at the Academy of Arts in Tirana. Chopin laureates will also give concerts in Durres in April 26 and at the Academy of Arts one day later, when the prize award ceremony is held.
The Chopin Year celebrations in Albania kicked off on February 28 with a concert organized by the Municipality of Tirana, the Frederic Chopin Association, and the Polish and French embassies in Tirana.
A square behind the Academy of Arts in Tirana, where the Chopin bust is located, was named after the famous composer. Young Polish pianists also performed in an open air concert after the plaque with Chopin’s name was unveiled.
Events continued on March 3 with a concert by Polish pianist Marek Szlezer at the National Theatre of Opera and Ballet with some of Chopin’s best compositions.
The Polish composer and virtuoso pianist is considered one of the great masters of Romantic music. The great majority of Chopin’s compositions were written for the piano as a solo instrument. Chopin invented musical forms such as the instrumental ballade and was responsible for major innovations in the piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, polonaise, 굵de, impromptu and prꭵde.
