TIRANA, Dec. 3 – Albania has warmly welcomed Montenegro’s invitation for membership into NATO, received Wednesday during the second day of proceedings of the North Atlantic Alliance Ministerial in Brussels, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
“Albania has been and remains a strong promoter of the open-doors policy of the Alliance, as Euro-Atlantic integration represents a vision for a more secure and sustainable trans-Atlantic community,” the statement said.
It added Albania is fully convinced of the geo-strategic importance of Montenegro’s membership in NATO, “not only for the Alliance, but also for the entire region, for it consolidates the security architecture in the Adriatic Europe area.”
In addition, Prime Minister Rama called the invitation “great news.”
“We are proud to have always supported our good neighbours and friends in this path,” Rama wrote on Twitter.
Albania has been a NATO member since 2008.
